Note: The full-height LTO8 tape drives provide faster data transfer (throughput) rates than half-height LTO 8 tape drives. For instance, 360 MB/s is the maximum native data transfer rate of a FH LTO8, whereas 300 MB/s is the maximum for HH LTO8. Both the HH and FH Ultrium 7 LTO7 tape drives have 300 MB/s maximum transfer rate, and both the HH and FH Ultrium 6 LTO tape drives have a 160 MB/s maximum transfer rate.
LENOVO TS4300 features and capabilities
- A high-speed bar code reader that supports random access mode.
- Support for mixed LTO tape media, including LENOVO LTO Ultrium 8, Ultrium 7, and Ultrium 6 WORM (Write Once Read Many).
- Remote management feature provides a web interface for managing the TS4300.
- Multi-path feature permits sharing of the library robotics across multiple platforms and heterogeneous applications independently of each other, supporting partitioning up to 21 logical libraries (requires 1 LTO drive per partition or logical library). Multi-path enables each logical library to have dedicated drives, storage slots, and control paths.
- Tape encryption is supported for LTO 8, LTO 7 and LTO 6 tape drives, uses LENOVO Security Key Lifecycle Manager software.
- Path Failover allows the host device driver to transparently switch to another path if a communication path failure occurs.
- Optional redundant power supplies.
- A 32-channel Dual-stage head actuator for LTO 8 and LTO 7 or 16-channel Dual-stage head actuator for LTO 6, providing precision head alignment for optimal density and data integrity.
- An advanced independent tape loader that improve reliability of loading and unloading LTO cartridges.
- The graceful dynamic braking for power failure protection, ensures reel motors maintain tension with a gradual deceleration to help prevent tape from breaking, stretching or loosening.
- The new servo and track layout technology improves data throughput and reading for environment susceptible to shock and vibrations.
Surface Control Guiding Mechanism reduces chances of damaging tape by guiding the tape along the tape path using the surface instead of edges to control tape motion. - LTO 8 tape drives use Tunneling Magneto-Resistive (TMR) head technology that increase storage capacity and height data integrity.
- LTO 7 and LTO 6 tape drives use Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) technology that minimizes tape wear of read/write heads, reduces damage to edges and minimizes debris accumulation for LTO 7 and LTO 6 tape drives.
- Digital speed matching enables LTO Tape Drives to perform dynamic speed matching that improves throughput (transfer rates) by adjusting the drive's native data rate to the optimal speed of the host data rate by calculating data compressibility which helps reduce the number of back-hitch repositions.
Robust drive components optimized for automation environments - Power management manages the drive electronics for optimal power usage.
- Adaptive read equalization compensates for dynamic changes in read-back signal response automatically.
- Dynamic amplitude asymmetry compensation dynamically optimizes read-back signals for linear read-back response from MR read head transducers.
- Separate writing of multiple file marks improves performance if a subsequent append overwrites after the first file mark, which helps prevent having to rewrite data sets containing data existing in the first file mark (append). The separate writing of multiple file marks is used for write command using two or more file marks, causing a separate data set to be written containing all file marks after the first.
- Uses Ultrium LTO Data Compression (LTO-DC) or Lempel-Ziv class 1 (LZ-1) data compression algorithm, which is an extension of Adaptive Lossless Data Compression (ALDC) and an improvement over previous LENOVO LTO tape drive lossless compression algorithms. However, the TS4300 uses LENOVO’s patented "Scheme-Swapping" compression to analyze the incoming data stream to determine the most efficient storage method to help optimize data compression and increase data throughput. The TS4300 compression ratio is up to 2.5 to 1 for LTO Ultrium 8, 7, and 6.
- LTO Cartridge Memory (LTO-CM)
- Statistical Analysis and Reporting System (SARS) is used to determine if the drive needs a tape cleaner, mark the media as degraded, and indicate that the hardware degraded. SARS also help isolate failures between media and hardware by analyzing the cartridge performance history in the CM module and the drive’s performance history of the EEPROM to help determine the likely cause of failure.
The LENOVO TS4300 is a flexible and scalable LTO Tape Library designed to meet growing long-term storage requirements of most company requirements, and uses open standards that allow support for almost any operating system, compatible with most backup software and entire network infrastructure. In general, the TS4300 supports LENOVO I, Power AIX, PowerVM, Unix, Windows, Linux, x86 platforms and compatible storage and networking hardware and software. http://Lenovo.com/systems/support/storage/ssic
