The IBM 5679 SAS RAID Enablement Card 57B7 44V4734 provides 175MB protected write cache to augment the performance and function of the embedded SAS disk controller in the system unit. The IBM 5679 daughter cards contain the RAID function and a 175MB of write cache. The auxiliary daughter card plugs into a special slot on the planar and provides battery power pack and redundant 175MB write cache memory for the daughter card. Concurrent maintenance of the RAID daughter card and the auxiliary daughter card is not supported, however, concurrent maintenance of the 57B8 44V3298 battery pack is supported. The daughter cards are installed in their own specific internal slots on the system unit backplane and do not require a PCI slot. The IBM 57B7 44V4734 5679 175MB SAS RAID Enablement Card is only available in refurbished or used conditioin as of September 26, 2014.

The IBM 57B7 44V4734 5679 adds RAID-5 and RAID-6 capability. A minimum of three disk units are required for a RAID-5 disk array, and a minimum of four disk units are required for a RAID-6 disk array.

IBM Two-core Power Systems 9 can use a SAS DASD Media Backplane 8345 in combination with IBM 57B7 44V4734 5679 to provide one external RAID enabled SAS port. One SAS EXP 12S disk drawer can be attached to this port and its disk drives controlled by the imbedded SAS disk controller. IBM one-core Power System models do not support this attachment. A SAS DASD Media Backplane with an external SAS port in combination with feature number 5679 provides one external RAID enabled SAS port.
