iSeries 9406 Memory, #3020 4GB Main Storage 870/890

Brand: IBM AS400 iSeries
Model Number: 3020-9406

The #3020 4GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM is used in the Models 870 and 890.

The Model 870: There are eight main storage card sockets on the backplane, but a maximum of four main storage cards can be placed in the system. main storage cards are installed according to the following rules:
  • Main storage cards are installed in pairs of equal capacity.
  • Pairs of main storage cards must plug into memory card slots under the same MCM (slots 0 and 1, slots 2 and 3).
  • Mixed main storage cards must be of the adjacent capacity. (4 GB with 8 GB is allowed, and 4 GB with 16 GB is not allowed.)
  • Cannot mix main storage cards of more than two capacities. (4 GB with 8 GB is allowed, and 4 GB with both 8 GB and 16 GB is not allowed.)
  • Mixed main storage cards can be in any order.

For the Model 870: Eight main storage card sockets exist on the backplane of the Model 870. A maximum of four main storage cards can be placed in the system:

  • #3015: 8GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM (Inner)
  • #3017: 32GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM (Inner)
  • #3020: 4GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM (Inner)
  • #3035: 16GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM (Inner)

The main storage cards are installed according to the following rules:

  • Installed in pairs of equal capacity
  • Pairs must plug into memory slots under the same
  • Multi-Chip Modules (MCMs) (ie: Slots 0/1, Slots 2/3).
  • Mixed storage cards must be of an adjacent incremental capacity (ie: 4GB and 8GB are allowed, but 4GB and 16GB are not allowed).
  • When mixed storage cards are used, lower capacity need not precede higher capacity.

For the Model 890: All main storage cards must be added in Pairs of the same capacity and technology. The slots are arranged in groups of Inner and Outer slots.

  • 24-way processors have 6 memory slots (4 Inner and 2 Outer)
  • 32-way processors have 8 memory slots (4 Inner and 4 Outer)
  • Inner Slots are slots 0, 1, 2, 3
  • Outer Slots are slots 4, 5, 6, 7
  • Inner slots are filled first

  • #3035: 16GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM (Inner)
  • #3036: 16GB Main Storage Card DRAM PSIMM (Outer)

The main storage cards are installed according to the following rules:

  • Main storage cards are installed in pairs of equal capacity.
  • Pairs must plug into slots under the same MCM (ie: Slots 0/1, Slots 2/3, Slots 4/5, Slots 6/7).
  • Mixed storage cards must be of an adjacent incremental capacity. (ie: 4GB and 8GB are allowed, but 4GB and 16GB are not allowed)
  • When mixed storage cards are used, lower capacity need not precede higher capacity.
  • Maximum of two card sizes on each Model 890.

Important: Fill all slots. An exception is allowed for 16GB on a 24-way processor and for 24GB on a 32-way processor.
