IBM TS7720 3956-XS9 24TB Cache Module TS7700
3956-XS9 provides approximately 24 TB of usable capacity for a TS7720. The TS7720 maximum supported usable capacity is approximately 240 TB, and maximum supported usable capacity of the TS7720 Encryption Capable Expansion Frame is approximately 384 TB. The TS7720 supports nine 3956-XS9 Cache Drawers in the F05 frame with a 7331. Each 3956-XS9 TS7720 Cache Drawer contains 11 DDMs, each have a raw capacity of 3 TB (2.73 TiB) or 24 TB (21.83 TiB) when used with RAID-6 formatting. The base TS7720 Cache can be configured to contain up to nine 3956-XS9 TS7720 Cache Drawers attached to one TS7720 Cache Controller. Fully configured, the base TS7720 Cache has a total usable capacity of 238.79 TB (217.18 TiB). A fully-configured base TS7720 Cache can be expanded by attaching to a TS7720 Storage Expansion Frame using FC 7332 TS7720 Encryption-capable expansion frame. The TS7720 Storage Expansion Frame adds one 3956-CS9 TS7720 Cache Controller, which can attach to a maximum of fifteen 3956-XS9TS7720 Cache Drawers providing 3 TB each.
A TS7720 Storage Expansion Frame can be added to a TS7720 Base Frame fully-configured with a 3956-CS9 cache controller and nine 3956-XS9 cache drawers using FC 7332 TS7720 Encryption-capable expansion frame. A TS7720 Base Frame that contains 3956-CS7 or 3956-CS8 cache controllers but not fully-configured can add a TS7720 Storage Expansion Frame containing a 3956-CS9 cache controller and up to 15 3956-XS9 cache drawers.
The 7116 provides 33 TB SAS storage in a TS7700 3956-XS9 Cache Drawer, providing 11 encryption-capable 3 TB 7200 RPM SATA disk drive modules for a total of 33 TB of disk storage capacity, supporting Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit encryption.

IBM TS7700 R3 provides the TS7720 Encryption Capable Base Frame and the TS7720 Encryption Capable Expansion Frame. The TS7720 encryption capable frames require installation of one TS7720 Cache Controller Model 3956-CS9. The TS7720 Encryption Capable Base Frame, identified by 3952 Model F05 feature 7331, also requires one TS7720 Server Model VEB and can have up to nine 3956-XS9 TS7720 Cache Modules. The TS7720 Encryption Capable Expansion Frame, identified by 3952 Model F05 feature 7332, can have up to fifteen 3956-XS9 TS7720 Cache Modules. The TS7720 Encryption Capable Expansion frame may be attached to any 3952-F05 TS7720 Base Frame, identified by feature 7322, or 3952-F05 TS7720 Encryption Capable Base Frame, identified by feature #7331. When the TS7720 Encryption Capable Expansion Frame is attached to the 7322 TS7720 Base Frame, installation of additional 3956-XS7 TS7720 SATA Cache Module is not permitted. To attach the TS7720 Encryption Capable Expansion Frame to a TS7720 Encryption Capable Base Frame, nine TS7720 Model XS9 must be installed in the base frame.

It leverages the benefits of both technologies by storing recent, frequently accessed data on disk to maximize performance in backup-and-restore operations, while moving older, less accessed data to tape, minimizing storage costs and securing long term retention. The TS7700 can also fulfill storage requirements for applications and deployments designed to store data on tape, but that also require disk performance and capabilities. The TS7700 can help reduce batch processing time, total cost of ownership, and management overhead.
TS7720 is a virtual tape system, with two configuration options: the TS7720 tape attach connects to a physical library, and the disk-only TS7720 system does not connect to a physical library. Both TS7720 options ship with the TS7720 Server model 3957-VEB. This model can be also used as a replacement in any of the current 3957-VEA configurations. The TS7720 Cache ships with 3 TB (2.73 TiB) SAS drives and can contain up to 240 TB (218.28 TiB) of raw disk cache in the TS7720 Base Frame. An option is available to expand the disk cache to a maximum of 1007.86 TB (916.65 TiB) of usable capacity by attaching to a maximum of two TS7720 Storage Expansion Frames. This option enables each additional TS7720 Cache Controller to function as a "head" of its own "string" of TS7720 Cache Drawers, creating a TS7720 Cache that operates with multiple heads of cache strings.
Field installation of 3956-XS9 is FC 5656, allows the field installation of a 3956-XS9 TS7720 Cache Drawer into an existing customer 3952 Tape Frame. The 3952 appears on the Tape Frame order, which must also include FC 9355 Field merge a TS7700 Cache Drawer in a 3952 F05 against the 3956-XS9.
