The IBM 578E 4-port 16Gb Fiber Channel Adapter PCIe3 x8 can be used in either x8 or x16 PCIe slots of a IBM Power system, has 01FT698, 01FT699 and 12R9314 part numbers and can have EN1C, EN1D, EL5W and EL5X feature codes. The IBM 578E, 01FT698, 01FT699 and 12R9314 are all identical, however the EN1C and EL5W have a tail stock for full height PCIe slots and the EN1D and EL5W have a tail stock for low profile PCIe slots.

The IBM 578E is a high-performance adapter based on the Emulex LPe31004-series 3rd generation PCIe HBA. The IBM 578E adapter has four 16Gb Fiber Channel ports, each port capable of providing up to 16Gb throughput speed simultaneously and use SR optics. Each 16Gb port provides single initiator capability over a Fiber link or with NPIV, multiple initiator capability is provided. The IBM 578E ports are SFP+ and include an optical SR transceiver. The IBM 578E ports have LC type connectors and use shortwave laser optics. The IBM 578E adapter operates at link speeds of 4, 8 and 16Gb speeds, and automatically negotiates to the highest speed possible. Each IBM 578E port has two LED indicators that are located on the bracket next to each connector. These LEDs communicate boot status and give a visual indication of the operating state. The LEDs have five defined state; solid on, solid off, slow blink, fast blink, and flashing. The slow blink rate is 1 Hz, the fast blink is 4 Hz, and the flashing refers to an irregular on/off transition that reflects test progress. The operator should observe the LED sequence for several seconds to ensure that the operating state is correctly identified.

Note: The Cables used will affect the performance or throughput of the Fiber Channel Adapter. The IBM 578E 4-port 16Gb Fiber Channel Adapter need to use multimode fibre optic cables with short-wave lasers that adhere to the following specifications:
